Originally created by four students, and now the world's largest student film and music festival, CMF is the only event of its kind to provide Apple laptops, camcorders, AT&T phones, and training all for free to tens of thousands of students around the globe. Students at over 50 colleges and universities in 2008-09 had one week to create their own short movies, with each school hosting red carpet finales to showcase its top movies. The best of the best moved on to their CMF regional grand finales at the Regency in San Francisco, Atlanta Symphony Hall in Atlanta, or Lincoln Center in New York City. These regional events determined the top student teams that moved onto the CMF International Grand Finale on the lot of Paramount Studios.
